There are two reasons for reading this book. The first is that all the previous Harry Dresden short stories are gathered together in one place, including the first, apparently unpublished short story that comes before Storm Front and whose relatively lesser qualities betray its status as one of Butcher’s first stories. And yet it also contains some very good sections and passages. Putting this story first gives a real feel for how Butcher has grown as a writer, and would probably be inspiring to any novice writers out there. But you have "Vignette," "Something Borrowed" (in which Harry for once is intentionally, and quite effectively, rude to a wicked stepmother), "It’s my birthday too," "Heorot," "Day off" (the only genuinely comedic Dresden work), "Backup," "The Warrior," (perhaps the most philosophical of the Dresden works), "Last Call," and "Love Hurts." Each is marked by the books which bracket it and they come in chronological order. Along the way it’s not hard to be reminded of Butcher’s penchant for homage to his favorite stories, films, and TV shows, as well as his gift for creating effective scenes of tension between main characters. Pretty much everyone in Dresden’s Chicago appears at one time or another, and some side plots and characters get fleshed out in these stories in ways that would be hard to duplicate in the main novels.

The second reason for reading this book is, of course, the final story in the book. "Aftermath" takes place shortly after the end of "Changes," a book certain to win the World Fantasy Award for Most Apt Title.
First things first: if you’re picking this up because you’re hoping that the included novella, _Aftermath_, will answer the huge cliffhanger at the end of Changes: it doesn’t, not clearly. No big answers here (though many of the stories, including Aftermath, will include plenty of small details to please and tease dedicated fans).

Instead, this collection is a set of alternate perspectives: stories from the viewpoint of Thomas or Murphy, a story that shows us Harry when he was just starting out as a detective, a story that focuses on Harry when he’s *not* working on a case and just trying to take a day off, a story that focuses on the Carpenter family, so forth. Butcher includes a paragraph or two of commentary at the head of each story, so we get to find out what *his* perspective is on each of the stories, too. A fair number of them were initially written for theme anthologies, so there’s a certain amount of "Harry Dresden Does a Wedding Story" or "Harry Dresden Does a Birthday Story" going on, but each stands on its own merits, and fans of the series will be very satisfied with what they get here (as long as they aren’t looking for answers to major plot arcs).

In fact, I’d go so far as to call this a "must read" for dedicated fans of the Dresden books: not only does each story have plenty of the action, comedy, and "Crowning Moments of Awesome" that have made the series so successful to date, but dedicated fans will find answers too all kinds of minor side puzzles that Butcher hasn’t necessarily addressed head-on in the novels (like more information about Gard’s true nature).

I read the AA Big Book and joined Overeaters Anonymous thinking I was a compulsive overeater. Perhaps I would have been an alcoholic, but my body chemistry never tolerated alcohol, smoking or drugs, so I was spared that. It turned out the weight problem was also a body chemistry thing, and the time I spent in diligent application to the 12-step program led me to realize I wasn’t a compulsive overeater after all.

Reading the AA Big Book was fantastic for me, and I recommend it to anyone. If you are not an addict, it will certainly not harm you to try a 12-step program. You are likely to come out, as I did after 10 months, with a deep respect for what these programs do. Miracles are everyday events in these groups.

Some of the people who have written reviews here resisted the tenets of AA because they are unwilling to submit to a higher power. That’s human nature. Anything else is itself a miracle.

My concerns about AA prior to reading the book were the opposite. I am a Christian and I was under the impression that the 12 steps are in conflict with that. Such is not at all the case. No one is going to try to hypnotize you!

Nor is a 12-step program going to tell you to avoid medical help. One of AA’s founders was a doctor, and right from the start AA began saving lives that doctors knew they could not save. It still happens in AA, daily.

If you are ready to be inspired, read this book. You will understand yourself and other people better. If you don’t feel ready to be inspired, maybe you need to read it even more.

I noticed one of the reviews complained about archaic language in the book. It’s not that archaic. You don’t need a glossary to read it, as you do with the King James Bible or Shakespeare!

At the end of each section, there’s about 25 to 35 questions on that subject. At the end of those, there’s an extra exam.

This book didnt come with any sort of code or anything to the online stuff. I kinda thought it would. However, it was still nice to have a new copy, since i’ve marked up mine quite a bit with highlights and circling answers to questions and whatnot.

I used this book exclusively for part 2 of the NBDE in 2014 and passed. There isn’t too much clutter in the book and, if you’re anything like me (which I’m sure you are), you don’t want to waste tons of time memorizing all the minutiae you had to for dental school. This book does a great job of narrowing it down to the facts that are truly important for passing the exam.

All of the professors at my school have been drawing from this book for their curriculum, and its layout makes it easy to study from.

My wife and I depart the first week in August for a Baltic Sea cruise aboard the Silver Whisper. Just found this new hard-cover book at B&N today. It has beautiful photos and information on many of the places we will be visiting. Not only are we enjoying it now and allowing to help our trip planning, but I can see it will be a book we will treasure for many years to come.

Since it focusses on a couple of places extensively, with handy, informative city walks and lots of info about eating, sleeping and transportation, but skips entire parts of the Scandinavic countries, this guide is very good, and perhaps even more useful than the Lonely Planet, if you only visit those places described in the book and not the rest. Not all major destinations are listed, e.g. Trondheim and Göteborg are missing, hence my 4 out of 5 stars, but even with those cities missing I though it a very useful book. The city walks are excellent and somehow we often ended up in restaurants that were listed.
I bought the ebook version which was very convenient on both phone and tablet, the only disadvantage being that you have to browse quite a bit between the city walk maps and the (very informative) written description.

The Rick Steves books are always great for trip planning and for tips on getting around once you get to your destination. We used them exclusively for our Italy/Switzerland trip this year and were never led astray. You can count on the books to represent transportation, lodging, and tourist sites accurately and give you tips for everything. We swear by these books. We are only in the planning stages of our Scandinavian trip, so we can’t attest to the on-the-ground aspect of this book yet, but I’m sure the information will be as spot on as in his other books.
