This "Fishing for Dummies: Second Edition" book is an outstanding reference for anyone interested in taking up fishing. It’s no substitute for an experienced guide, but you would get much more out of one if you have the prerequisite knowledge provided in this book.

The authors cover rods, reels and tackle which will save an inexperienced fisherman a whole lot of trouble when gearing up for that first trip – if you’re the guy with a casting rod and a spinning reel you’ll know why your bait keeps breaking off when casting. You’ll discover the general lay of the aquatic land along with the accompanying sensible fish congregation theories as well. Overall the book is quite useful.

There’s a nice, practical section on some useful knots, although I think the illustration for figure 15-5b is incorrect (over and under should be reversed), and may luck be with anyone trying to figure out what’s happening with the surgeon’s knot.

There is a "Fly Fishing for Dummies" book that expands on the subject more than what’s covered here, but I do not understand the point in explaining the number of different flies without accompanying illustrations. We’re supposed to be "dummies" (to the subject) after all, and I retained nothing useful from the ones I read word-for-word except for those with illustration. If you’re going to eat up the reader’s time with fly descriptions, then simply add images of them as well to make them useful.

The fishing techniques, cleaning procedures and preparation methods for the catch you intend to keep round the book out nicely. I probably would enjoy a section with a general summary on the time of year which is best for catching a few species of fish in certain regions.
Everyone laughs when they see me with this book. My friends and family all know my fondness for fishing, as well as the fact that I’m far from stupid in regards to fishing or anything else. However, putting the title aside, this is a fantastic book for those, like me, who are not completely stupid, but not exactly the wiliest of fishermen either.

It covers just about everything in regards to fishing, from the basics to more advanced information. More importantly, it includes the "why" things are done the way they are.

I’ve fished six or seven states, in three distinct areas of the country, and each time I move, it’s like starting to learn the process all over again. Believe me, fishing for white trout on the Gulf Coast is NOTHING like fishing for rainbow trout in mountain streams of the West!

Whether you are a serious fisherman or someone who just wants to be an efficient fisherman on your summer vacation, this book has information for you. It helps you understand why things work…or don’t work, why you like certain types of tackle (or don’t like them) and what kinds of tactics will work in what circumstances. It’s great information to drag along for lazy summer afternoons in the hammock, armchair reading as the snow falls outside and you are dreaming of summer…or even while you are waiting for that elusive bite on your pole. I loved the book, and highly recommend it.

Some of the other reviews indicate its good for "women or novice fishermen" but it’s hardly that narrow of a field that this book would assist them in understanding who, what, where, and how–often explaining in very clear terms exactly why something is an effective choice, even if the experienced fisherman doesn’t know why they do (or don’t do) something.
