The Nickelback of GRE Prep I've been a GRE tutor since 2008. We tutors tend to agree than Kaplan GRE books are some of the worst in the industry, and this one is no exception. Poor question realism, mediocre advice, and spotty coverage of GRE concepts.Why, then, do so many students buy them? The brand name and the millions of Kaplan marketing dollars. There are so many better options, though. Just like talking to someone whose favorite band is Nickelback - you want to tell them about the thousands of other bands that are so much better.(No offense if you like Nickelback, but come on - your FAVORITE band?)Anyway, skip this book and make sure most of your learning is from official ETS GRE questions and tests. There are better sources of technique out there for free on YouTube, as well, or from books like The Princeton Review or Manhattan Prep. And you can learn tons of math for free on Khan Academy.ehh.. maybe not this one. I don't know if I can really recommend this book.The basic material is quite good, it gives a very good overview of basic math, and verbal test taking skills. The vocabulary lists are extensive and pretty well organized too. So in terms of raw study material, this book is fine.However, when it comes to actual GRE preparation, this book is totally inadequate. After taking the actual GRE, I realized two things.First: the verbal practice material was massively harder than the actual GRE. The basic question format was similar, but the GRE was more balanced in terms of vocabulary use, and the reading passages were more clear. The Kaplan questions were written as though they were being paid per thesaurus word, and were almost comical in their overuse of fancy vocabulary words. The end result was that I was very worried about how I'd do on the GRE verbal section, when in fact I basically aced it.Second, the quantitative practice material was incredibly easy in comparison to the GRE. I basically nailed all the practice question sets, and going into the test, I felt very confident that I was going to recognize tricks and be able to analyze the questions well. What actually happened was that I was absolutely blindsided by the difficulty of the questions. My score was adequate but not great. I ran out of time on every math section, and by the end I was actually laughing at the screen because of how woefully unprepared I was for the types of questions I was being asked. The Kaplan material gave me absolutely zero awareness of what I was walking into. I was truly shocked.On the plus side, for $20-ish, you get a pretty good set of basic study material. If your math skills have been underutilized for years, and you don't read enough for fun, this book will help you at least get up to a functional level, so in that respect I don't feel ripped off.However, as an actual preparation guide for the GRE? Absolutely not. Indeed, the "test day" section itself is actually incorrect, because among other thing it tells you to bring a watch and snacks/drinks, whereas watches are expressly banned by ETS, and the testing center didn't allow any kind of food or drink at all.Virtually Identical to the 2017 Edition, with zero real GRE questions. I'm a Harvard grad, 99% GRE scorer (337, 168Q / 169V / 5.5 AW) and professional GRE tutor since 2002. Although Kaplan books are consistently among the top-selling GRE guides on Amazon, I usually find them to be of poor to mediocre quality, and this book is no exception. In particular, it is important to note that this book, like all third-party GRE strategy books, does not contain any real GRE questions. Instead, the practice tests and GRE questions within are entirely synthetic--written by Kaplan, not ETS, the maker of the GRE--and thus are often lacking from a realism standpoint.GRE Prep Plus 2018 (currently $24) is marketed as a "comprehensive prep system" for the GRE. Yet like its predecessor, GRE Premier 2017 with 6 Practice Tests: Online + Book + Videos + Mobile (Kaplan Test Prep), to which it is virtually identical in content, almost nowhere in the book (other than one line of text buried on page 576) do the authors reference the GRE official test materials, such as the Official Guide to the GRE The Official Guide to the GRE General Test, Third Edition, the GRE Super Power Pack Official GRE Super Power Pack 2/E (Test Prep), and the free PowerPrep software from ETS, which are indispensable parts of the GRE prep process, and the only sources of real GRE questions (around 1,000 official questions total). So how could this book ever be honestly marketed as “comprehensive?” I understand that there are copyright issues involved, but the least Kaplan could do is to direct students' attention to these essential materials—otherwise it is doing its readers a disservice by making them feel fully prepared for the GRE, when they in fact are not. If acing the GRE were as easy as Kaplan makes it seem, then everyone would do it. The fact is that to maximize your score, you need to put in hard work and practice with real GRE questions.Why are the GRE Official Guides the very best place to start your GRE preparation, other than the free PowerPrep software? Because the questions in these books are super-realistic. They are just like the questions on the real GRE, because these books are written by the test-maker and use actual GRE questions. Don't waste your time and money practicing on questions made by any other companies--these are merely inferior imitations of the real thing. If you must use other materials for test strategy and learning, then that's fine, and in most cases necessary, but try your best to stick to official questions whenever possible.Like most Kaplan books shortly after their release, dozens of five-star reviews of this book are sure to quickly appear. I would urge you to read those reviews carefully, and to evaluate your sources of information critically, in order to determine which reviews are written by actual GRE test takers, and which ones are not.Here are my recommendations for GRE practice, strategy, and learning guides that are superior to Kaplan's.1) The free PowerPrep software from ETS, which includes 2 full CATs, a Test Preview Tool, an untimed practice test (same as Test #1), and Extended Time options.2) The Official Guide to the GRE, 3rd edition: The Official Guide to the GRE General Test, Third Edition3) The GRE Super Power Pack, 2nd edition: Official GRE Super Power Pack 2/E (Test Prep)4) Manhattan Prep Strategy Guides: Manhattan Prep GRE Set of 8 Strategy Guides (Manhattan Prep GRE Strategy Guides)5) Manhattan Prep 5-Lb Book of GRE Practice Questions: 5 lb. This book did an amazing job of helping me understand the difference between sharing ... This book was life changing for me. I'd already read Gifts of Imperfection, and have been struggling with having healthy boundaries with a psychologically unhealthy parent.This book did an amazing job of helping me understand the difference between sharing vulnerability in ways that lead to connection and over-sharing in ways intended to manipulate an audience - and why that oversharing has always led to disconnection.For the men out there - I'd recommend starting with this book (rather than gifts of imperfection) as Brown broadens her research to include men here. And I really liked the way this book works through so many interesting topics and challenging scenarios.One of my favorite parts is on professing love vs practicing love (below). It made me appreciate that when someone tells me they love me, then treats me badly, that it isn't really love at all.During a recent radio interview about my research, the hosts (my friends Ian and Margery) asked me, “Can you love someone and cheat on them or treat them poorly?”I didn’t have much time, so I gave the best answer I could based on my work: “I don’t know if you can love someone and betray them or be cruel to them, but I do know that when you betray someone or behave in an unkind way toward them, you are not practicing love. And, for me, I don’t just want someone who says they love me, I want someone who practices that love for me every day.”Some people flip houses. This book will flip your life. Last week I was sitting outside a coffee shop reading a book on my kindle when a youngish guy walked by carrying a coffee and a computer, looking for a place to sit.Since all of the tables were occupied and he was looking a bit displaced, I offered him a seat at my table. Relieved, he sat down and expressed his gratitude. I promptly went back to my reading but I could feel his eyes boring into me as I anticipated the dreaded question."What are you reading?" he finally blurted.Now I know this is neither a profound nor earth-shattering inquiry but there were two problems at hand here.One, I'm terrible at summarizing books. Just awful. (Which you're about to discover.) There's just something about the vast amount of information that I'm pressured to wrap into one or two sentences that completely overwhelms and paralyzes me.And two, I was reading a book about shame and vulnerability. Which ironically, I was ashamed to admit for fear of being vulnerable. Clearly, I had just started reading the book.Part of me was tempted to lie to youngish guy by replying, "oh, it's just some silly novel."But then it occurred to me how shameful it would be to lie about reading a book about shame and vulnerability instead of just being vulnerable. Besides, as I'm sure it's obvious--I could use the practice."I'm reading Daring Greatly by Brené Brown. It's about shame and vulnerability and how shame can truly only dissipate by allowing yourself to be vulnerable", I quickly blurted.Allowing myself to be vulnerable led Patrick and I into a conversation for the next hour. Patrick, if you're reading this, c'était une joie pour vous rencontrer. (If this is wrong I blame Google translate.)This moment of unabashed vulnerability with Patrick was the beginning of a major shift in my life. And I have Daring Greatly to thank for that.*I've always been one to be honest and open but Brene Brown's writing in Daring Greatly takes openness to another level.She reinforces what I've known all along but been afraid of admitting--that vulnerability leads to happiness. Or as Brown calls it, "wholeheartedness".And I, and maybe you too, could damn well use some wholeheartedness in my life.We're living in a culture of `never enough'. I'm certainly feeling it. Are you? I never work hard enough, I don't help others enough, I'm not successful enough, I don't eat healthy enough... and on and on.These thoughts of `never enough' turn into feelings of shame and fear. How do we combat shame and fear? By being vulnerable and expressing gratitude, according to Brené Brown. And now, according to me.Following Brene's advice and expertise garnered through her research and life stories, truly does work.It was the reading of Daring Greatly that prompted me to finally divulge my long kept secret of my history with an eating disorder; which wound up being my highest trafficked blog post of all time. As Brown explains, we're drawn to other's vulnerability but repelled by our own.Are you living with shame? Do you always feel an underlying itch of `never enough'? I’ve read every book she’s written. I so wanted to love this book but it was so dark and so miserable, that I just couldn’t get into it. The holocaust was not amusing but I’ve read books before that focused on this horrific time in history and loved them. This one just made me sad. And it was actually a tedious read.So sad to have read so quickly I can never savor an Alice Hoffman book because they are so engaging and i love the characters so much I rapidly complete them. The best I can do is to read them over and over. If you read Alice Hoffman I need say no more. If you don’t usually read her - start now. Read every single book she ever wrote. You won’t be sorry. You will be touched by magic!

If you saw the author's TED talk on grit, there is not much you will learn from reading this book I normally never post a review on Amazon, but in this case I simply could not stop mysefl from posting it, as I had great expectations about this book after seeying the TED talk of Ms. Duckworth and hearing a Freakonomics podcast with her. In the end, I was disappointed.Please also excuse grammar/ spelling, as I'm writing this from Russia and I'm not a native English speaker.This book tells us that grit (and not talent or luck) is essential for success in life.The reader will find multiple anecdotes on how so-and-so achieved much by perseverence, passion and not giving up.So half of the book is dedicated to showing a reader how important is grit for success (quite convincingly, but to my taste, way too extensively; couple of anecdotes and studies mentioned would have done as good as these several chapters). Along with anecdotes some (quite robust) scientific evidence is given.What the book lacks completely, is scientifically based advice HOW TO BUILD GRIT. As someone, who struggles to be gritty in my daily life, I had great hopes to find valuable hints in this book. There are a few, but very "soft" ones (like the author assumes they should work, but being honest with the reader, concedes that there is no evidence behind these tips).I found this book to be the perfect hybrid of informative and motivating I found this book to be the perfect hybrid of informative and motivating. If you're looking for a book that will help educate you as to what you should do in your life and how you can be successful doing it, then this is the book for you. It lays out chapter-by-chapter both the science and the steps you'll need to take in order to make changes in your life that will lead you to success or at least put you on the path towards it. The mix of anecdotes, profiles, scientific studies, and personal stories all combine to form a really easy-to-read and educational book that is laid out and displayed in a simple yet interesting way. Below I took a crack at the things I'm going to do now going forward as a result of reading this book:1. Define what success looks like (i.e., I want to get into politics and would eventually like to become a Senator)2. Clearly define my goals in terms of short-term, medium-term and long-term3. Assign myself stretch goals4. Reflect and learn from any obstacles or challenges or failures faced5. Begin deliberate practice in my field (repeatedly stepping outside my comfort zone and trying activities beyond my current abilities)6. Seek a coach and / or mentor7. Gather and then grow a support network of friends, family, and industry professionals8. Become even more obsessed / interested in my field and consume myself with news, books, articles, lectures, etc.9. Learn from others who are where I want to be10. Never become complacent or satisfiedGood stories, difficult to justify a full book I commend the author for her effort on this book. The stories of people with the ability to persist are lively and interesting, but the overall feeling is of reading small vignette style biographies of people who are smarter, better, and more talented than you are, with anecdotal insights sprinkled throughout.There's a measure of inspiration in her foundational message that, through hard work and persistence, you can become the best version of yourself. Her main point is that it's unlikely that you know your own limits, and that the act of striving against them each day can take you to an unexpectedly good place. However, the true value of this book would have been to teach us the best methods for increasing and maintaining our own grit, and to show that those methods are proven through research. Unfortunately, that doesn't yet exist because the research hasn't been conducted, except in a preliminary fashion.Because that answer doesn't exist, the book and stories are reduced to a collection of recitations of interviews of successful people, not unlike other business and self-help books. It has a dusting of authority from the author herself, since she has substantially contributed to the field. An interested reader can glean their own lessons from that material, in additions to the insights the author provides. Still, the book lacks true weight, and would be greatly served by an update in a few years as the author and her peers conduct more research on the subject.

It reinforces the feeling that politics is a closed system: if you weren’t participating in debate club, the Young Democrats and Model UN you have no chance.

Karine Jean-Pierre’s story breaks the mold. In Moving Forward, she tells how she got involved, showing how politics can be accessible to anyone, no matter their background. In today’s political climate, the need for all of us to participate has never been more crucial. This book is her call to arms for those who know that now is the time for us to act.

Why did the publishers lighten her skin on the cover? I like Karine Jean-Pierre. However, I am offended that the publishers thought it necessary to lighten her skin on the cover.Great if you're a fan of Karine Jean-Pierre, otherwise a bit light on substance Three and a half stars might be better. It's a well-written story detailing Jean-Pierre's career. She starts with her childhood as an immigrant born in Martinique, who arrived in the US from France with her Haitian parents at age five. If you're an openly gay woman of color who wants to get into politics, this is a great book for you! Inspirational for people who are not natural politicians but want to make a difference. I especially liked the section at the end on how to actively support fine journalism. A good counterpoint to Trump's hateful rhetoric on immigrants in general and Haiti in particular.Jean-Pierre's career as a political campaign organizer, professor, and TV personality representing MoveOn and other progressive causes is indeed amazing. I also enjoyed her description of a trip she took to Haiti to make a film on the Haitian diaspora. She was surprised at how much she felt like a foreigner there, and that she was treated as a foreigner by Haitians.Jean-Pierre is easy to like. If you like her, you'll like the book. If you're not already a fan of hers, it can seem a bit lightweight. Hopefully this will turn out be just the story of Jean-Pierre's early life and career, with many great things ahead.Powerful Story, Perfect for our Time Really inspirational and relatable story perfect for the times we live in.
